Child Care Volunteer at PIllars Adult and Family Shelter

Child Care volunteers provide supervision to children in shelter; generally ranging from 0-12 years old, while parents attend group sessions in shelter. This is a great opportunity to bring in/create your own activity, or utilize items in shelter, to provide an escape for the children and allow them to be kids, allowing parents to focus in group sessions.

Key Responsibilities:

·      Supervise young children in shelter while their parents attend group sessions

·      Provide an activity for kids in shelter or utilize shelter items to engage children

·      Navigate typical situations such as sharing and temper tantrums

·      NOT EXPECTED to change diapers or potty train children; parents are in shelter for any of these situations.

·      Have fun!

How to Volunteer: Volunteers sign up for dates depending on availability & openings.
1. You have to become a volunteer first by attending a volunteer orientation. Sign up through the first link under Requirement Detail. 
2. Check the most recently updated availabilities through the second link below before deciding on a volunteer shift. Shifts are taken really fast so please plan ahead
3. Sign up through the second link below so Pillars know volunteers are coming.
4. Register by clicking on the top right green icon so records can be kept on GivePulse. Please be sure so sign up through both the link and GivePulse. 
It is really important to follow these steps. 

If you have already become a volunteer at Pillars and just want to add your hours, click Add Impacts. 

Possible Shifts:
-2nd & 4th Tuesday each month from 6:30-8 pm (4 people needed for each shift)
-3rd Wednesday each month from 6:15-7:45 pm (4 people needed for each shift)

Training: Depending on your availability, meet with Volunteer Manager, or Shelter Client Advocate to walk-thru shelter. On the day of Child Care shift, you will have the assistants of Shelter Client Advocates to get started and throughout the entirety of the shift.

Transportation: LU service shuttles are available for both individuals and student groups doing ff campus service. The shuttle runs every Sat and Sun from 9 am to 5 pm. To submit a service shuttle request click here You should fill out this form even if you are volunteering as an individual who needs transportation so the drivers know when to pick you up. Please do so at least 7 days ahead to secure seating.

Requirement Details
-Volunteer Orientation. Mandatory for everyone before becoming volunteers. It is also a great chance to get any questions answered. Details and sign-ups through here: 
-Background Check( free of charge and really quick. Some experience with children is required, such as being with siblings, formal experience working at a daycare, babysitter or child service center)
-Check for Pillars' availabilities through then sign up for a shift at least one week ahead of time.  
-If Volunteer as a group, group leader needs to fill out a wavier and all group members have to sign their names on it.  
-Please email for any questions. 
-18 years or older 
-Great patience, problem-solving skills, and dependability 
-Be able to find joy in engaging with children
