Description

Dinner Service groups provide a hot meal each night to clients staying at Pillars shelters. There are 60 total clients each night, and it is our goal to make sure they are fed and provided the fuel needed for the following day. Dinner Service volunteers are asked to provide, prepare, and serve a meal for individuals staying at Pillars Adult Shelter located at 1928 W. College Avenue (The Pillars Adult and Family Shelter is different from Pillars Adult and Family Shelter).

Key Responsibilities:

·      Prepare a healthy & nutritious meal for clients staying in shelter. The suggested serving is 60-70 servings for Adult Shelter. You need to bring ingredients to make a meal. (This is different from Adult and Family Shelter)

·      Serve clients, buffet-style as they come through the meal line

·      Package & label leftovers for late-night snacks and other meals

·      Using shelter donations, prepare bagged lunches for clients working the following day

·      Clean-up kitchen area and wash dishes following dinner service

Volunteer Shifts:

-  from 5-8pm, every day. A group of 5-7 people needed.

How to Volunteer:
1. Click on the link under the Requirement Detail box to check Pillars' availabilities before deciding on which day you will serve the meal. The link has volunteer schedules for the whole year and just click on the tabs to look up specific months.
2. Decide on a day, make sure you have at least a group of 5 people and sign up through the same link.
Please register at least two weeks ahead because the dinner service schedule is very tight and it is hard to squeeze in a group within a short time.
3. Click the top right green icon to register for the event so the administrator knows about your volunteer event. It is really IMPORTANT to sign up through the link AND to register here on GivePulse so both Pillars and Lawrence are informed.

Transportation: LU service shuttles are available for both individuals and student groups doing ff campus service. The shuttle runs every Sat and Sun from 9 am to 5 pm. To submit a service shuttle request click here https://www.lawrence.edu/students/volunteer/student-orgs/shuttle. Please do so at least 7 days ahead to secure seating.

Training: Depending on your availability, you will shadow an existing volunteer group, walk-thru the kitchen, or have a meal host with you at the beginning of your scheduled date. Meal hosts are experienced servers who help new groups if shadowing an existing volunteer group is not done.
